Islamist fighters killed five people in Somalia an attacks on government forces.
Al Shabab has retreated from view but the Islamic group has continued it’s attacks on government forces. The group placed bombs under a tree just north of the city and lobbed a grenade into a market area in Bakara.
The Islamists control most of the country. The government and African Union troops control the capital city of Mogadishu.
Al Qaeda sources told the BBC they were behind a homicide bomber attack in Yemen that killed at least 90 people.
The homicide bomber ran into a crowd preparing for a military parade wearing an army uniform. He apparently targeted a group of soldiers near the Presidential palace. Continue reading →
Markets across Europe were rocked this morning after more bad economic news for banks in Spain.
Late Thursday credit agency Moody’s cut the credit ratings of sixteen Spanish banks. Moody’s also cut the credit rating of Santander UK, the British subsidiary of Spanish banking giant Santander.
Moody’s stated reasons for the downgrade included Spain’s return to a recession, bad loans in the property industry and financial challenges for the government. Continue reading →
Seven people were killed and thirteen injured when a homicide bomber attacked a governor’s compound in western Afghanistan.
The attack in Farah province also resulted in the deaths of four of the attackers. The first blew himself up at the gate and others tried to fight their way through the gate into the compound.

Shares in the Spanish bank, Bankia, were down 14% after reports about the struggling bank’s finances.
The bank denied reports that customers had withdrawn over 1 billion euros from various accounts. The bank is set to be part-nationalized.

Researchers in Japan have a new system that will increase internet data transmission rates to 20 times over the most common internet wi-fi standard. The research claims that the “T-Ray” band could offer huge amounts of bandwidth that has been previously unavailable to businesses and consumers.
The band is between the microwave and the far-infrared regions of the spectrum and it’s currently unregulated, allowing anyone to use the space. Continue reading →
Greek citizens rushed to withdraw money from banks as the threat of economic failure continues to grow.
Over 700 million euros were withdrawn from banks ($894 million American dollars). Greece’s president, Karolos Papoulias, revealed the information during discussions with leaders of rival political groups.
